MANILA (PHILSTODAYUSA) – Manila Congressman Amado S. Bagatsing of the fifth district of Manila has firmed up leadership in the mayoralty race in Manila as more leaders and voters have deserted Mayor Joseph Estrada due to alleged corruption and anomalies and joined his bandwagon.
Leading those left the camp of Estrada is reelectionist Rep. Rosenda Ann “Sandy” Ocampo of the sixth district of Manila. Ocampo was formerly also a supporter of former Mayor Alfredo Lim but left the former mayor for Bagatsing despite being a relative.
Other congressmen of Manila, it was learned, will follow Ocampo’s move in joining Bagatsing in his mayoralty bid and following the footsteps of his late father, Mayor Ramon D. Bagatsing.
Congresswoman Ocampo’s brother, former Manila Councilor Chiqui Ocampo, has also joined the camp of Bagatsing as officiall candidate for councilor in the sixth district of Manila.
Bagatsing and Ocampo attended a mass at the San Agustin Church befor filing their certificates of candidacy on Monday, October 12, before the Commission on Elections accompanied by thousands of supporters.
Many Manilans are disenchanted with Mayor Estrada for imposing fees at the city public hospitals and higher taxes, privatization of the city public markets, Manila Zoo and the historic city-owned Army and Navy Club property in Rizal Park and the demolitiion of a historic building of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila.
Bagatsing is running for mayor with Councilor Ali Atienza, son of former Mayor Lito Atienza, for vice mayor under the Kabaka (Kabalikat sa Kaunlaran) party. (Jo Erlinda Gabot Nebres)
