THE COLUMNIST – Art G. Madlaing
VALLEJO COUNCILMAN Bob Sampayan: Candidate for Mayor

Sleep is something we do every night. It greatly affects our mind, body and soul. Sleep is one of the most crucial things you can do yet it is rarely discussed. The Bible reminds us of the importance of proper and good sleep.

Exodus 33:14 “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest,” is a promise of the Almighty God to all God’s children.

I would like to share to our readers excerpts of the article“REJUVENATE” written by my friend and fitness guru Chris Walker.

I learned this the hard way. When I was studying for my MBA at night while working 10 hours a day, I became addicted to caffeine. I thought I needed it to function but in reality it was creating a vicious cycle. I would struggle to fall asleep due to all the caffeine in the morning and throughout the day. I need my caffeine to be ‘productive.’ That certainly wasn’t the answer.

God intended for man to rest about one-third of their lives. Too many Christians I’ve worked with don’t embrace this idea and it greatly affects their weight. There’s too much evidence showing lack of sleep is tied directly to obesity and chronic diseases making us fat and sick.

As I read the Bible, I quickly realized caffeine wasn’t the only thing keeping me awake at night. There was something far worse and it only came to light when I read Proverbs 3:24 and meditated on it. ‘When you lie down, you will not be afraid, when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.’

The culprit I was dealing with was worry and fear. Part of my sleepless problems had to do with my spiritual emptiness.

I was worrying about things completely out of my control. This alone allowed me to immediately see I shouldn’t carry the burdens all by myself. Matthew 11:28-30 reminds us, ‘Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and your will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.’

God intended for us to go to sleep every night and sleep well while He watches over us. In Psalm 121:4 ‘He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep’ reminds us we are not God. God handles the world for us so we can sleep and rest and feel completely rejuvenated.

Sleep assists in healing. Dr. Justus Schifferes, former Director of the Health Education Council, said, ‘Sleep is more than a time of rest and relaxation. It is also a time of recuperation and repair, of growth and regrowth. During the normal course of living, cells of the body wear out and must be replaced. This regeneration takes place more rapidly during sleep.’

Also, too little sleep impairs our ability to process emotional information. Not only are you doing yourself a disservice, but you are affecting every interaction you have with the people you love.

If you consistently get enough of the right kind of sleep, you’ll give yourself the best chance to be your absolute best self.”

As my personal gift and appreciation to our readers, I am giving away FREE copies of “Seven Easy Ways to Guarantee a Great Night’s Sleep for Complete Rejuvenation.” Make sure to get a FREE copy for you and your family. GOODBYE AND CONDOLENCE: I was fortunate to attend the Visitation and Memorial Servicesof my nephew Susimo Peralta Soriano last Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at the Fry Memorial Chapel in Tracy, California. “Simo” died at a young age of 51 after battling colon cancer for two years. At the eulogy,   Johnny Sampayan Peralta, described his cousin and co-worker who just retired as supervisor as good provider for his family, caring father and loving  husband who  smartly planned his early and timely retirement for his family. As founder of FITNESS FOR HUMANITY (aka FITNESS FOR CHRIST), I was touched by Johnny’s challenge and reminder to everyone in the audience to seriously take care of their health by maintaining a healthy lifestyle (good nutrition plus regular exercise plus supplementation). Others who shared their precious memories with “Simo” included his older brother Edwin “Kit” Peralta Soriano and Heather Peralta. I was able to read the poem “THE DASH” in memory of my nephew.

It was a blessing to see many of my uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, townmates, friends and other relatives at the Visitation & Memorial Services. I was delighted to see my cousin Samson Sampayan who is working for the campaign of our cousin and incumbent councilman Bob Sampayan, candidate for Mayor in the City of Vallejo in the November, 2105 elections. I personally ask our readers to help and support the candidacy Bob Sampayan as the next Mayor of Vallejo.

I bid goodbye to my nephew “Simo”; and condolence to his wife Cynthia Soriano; to his daughters Crystal and Cheryl; to his parents Domingo Soriano and Pacita Sampayan Peralta Soriano; and to his brothers Edwin Peralta Soriano and Raul Peralta Soriano and his sister Susan.
